In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves) On this day in 1901, Vittorio De Sica was born. De Sica was an actor and director, an important figure in the Italian neorealist cinema of the 1940s. Two of his films -- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis -- won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; in the years before that category was created, two other De Sica movies -- Shoeshine and Bicycle Thieves -- won honorary Oscars. De Sica directed more than 30 films, and appeared as an actor in about 150 more. In Bicycle Thieves, a father and his son scour Rome in search of the father's stolen bicycle, without which he will lose his job; the movie is available for streaming at Kanopy, or on DVD.
David Eddings: Pawn of Prophecy On this day in 1931, David Eddings was born. With his wife, Leigh, Eddings wrote several popular series of epic fantasy novels. Leigh Eddings was not credited as co-author until about a decade into Eddings' success; their editor believed that co-authored books sold less well, and encouraged the authors to use a solo by-line. The "Belgariad" series, published with only David Eddings' name, is the story of a young man's quest to find a sacred stone in order to slay an evil god; the series begins with Pawn of Prophecy, which is available as an e-audio at OverDrive.
Michala Petri: Scandinavian Moods And on this day in 1958, Michala Petri was born. Petri is a recorder virtuoso whose repertoire ranges from the Baroque, the period when the instrument was the most popular, to contemporary works written specifically for her. Petri has recorded more than 30 albums, including Scandinavian Moods, a collection of short pieces by Grieg, Nielsen, and other Scandinavian composers; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal.
