Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Walter Farley: The Black Stallion On this day in 1922, Walter Farley was born. Farley began writing his most famous book, The Black Stallion, while he was still in high school. The book tells the story of Alec and the Black Stallion who develop a strong bond when they are shipwrecked together; after their rescue, Alec teams with a retired trainer to develop the horse into a champion racer. Farley continued the story of Alec and his horse in a series of 20 books written over a 40-year period. The Black Stallion is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, or in print.
Claudio Abbado On this day in 1933, Claudio Abbado was born. Abbado was an orchestral and opera conductor who came from a musical family. He was at his strongest in late Romantic-era and contemporary repertoire, and was particularly known for his performances of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. Abbado conducted from memory whenever possible, and was noted for speaking very little during rehearsals, preferring to communicate with the orchestra through gesture and facial expression. A variety of Abbado's recordings is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Chris Isaak: Silvertone And on this day in 1956, Chris Isaak was born. Isaak is a singer and actor whose biggest popular success came with his 1991 song "Wicked Game." His musical style is a modern update of 50s rock crooners, strongly influenced by Roy Orbison. As an actor, Isaak has generally played smaller roles, but he did star for three years as a version of himself in The Chris Isaak Show, a sitcom about the everyday problems of a rock singer and his band. Several of Isaak's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla.
