She is perhaps best known for her collaborations with her late husband, writer-director John Cassavetes. They made ten films together, two of which (A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria) earned Academy Award nominations for Rowlands' performances. |On this day in 1945, Tobias Wolff was born. Wolff writes in various forms, but is best known for his short stories and memoirs. His first short story collection was published in 1981, and was part of an increase in the popularity of short stories among American writers and readers. Wolff's 1989 memoir, This Boy's Life, focuses on his adolescence in Seattle and rural Washington in the 1950s. |And on this day in 1950, Ann Wilson was born. Wilson and her sister Nancy have been the core members of the rock band Heart for more than forty years, Ann as the lead singer and Nancy as the guitarist. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Heart was a staple on the pop charts with such songs as "Magic Man," "Alone," and "These Dreams." Their music has always been a mix of wide-ranging elements, reflecting influences from acoustic folk to heavy metal. Several of Heart's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.|
