When John Bruckman came to the Los Angeles Public Library in 1953, he delighted in his work in the History Department. Passionate about the history of his adopted state of California, he prowled the stacks for old and obscure titles. His colleagues remember him saying, in his gruff German accent: "These books are too imporatant to be pushed back and forth, back and forth, on dusty shelves!" He gathered the best of the best, cajoled the building maintenance manager to build shelves in a cool portion of the basement (a makeshift vault sometimes referred to as "the Cask of Amontillado"), and thus created what became the Rare Books Collection.
With the comradeship and support of Ernie Siegel and Charles Weisenberg, John sought and purchased outstanding examples of Californiana. Soon, the Rare Books Collection included important titles from ALL the departments at Central Library, and donations and gifts poured in.
John would be pleased to know that his beloved books are housed in a handsome place, with proper climate control and up-to-date equipment. It is with gratitude and pride that the Board of the Bruckman Rare Book Friends voted to declare an annual award in his honor.
