Reading Success

LAPL Booklists recommend a wide range of high quality and popular titles. Booklists also help teachers select the best read-alouds.

Computers and the Internet

Many LAPL libraries have special educational software and word-processing capability for kids. Branches are also "Virtual Libraries" which provide access to many of Central Library's computerized databases.

Daytrum is an online magazine that reviews computer games and "provides a technology guide that helps parents understand the latest video games and computer and internet technologies."

LAPL Electronic Terminals

The LAPL Kids' Catalog provides access to an on-line catalog of over 1 million titles, periodical articles, and an array of electronic reference sources. Librarians at every LAPL agency will help kids and parents use these catalogs.

Programs

The Central Library's Children's Literature Department and LAPL's 71 Branches offer many opportunities to hear a story, try a craft, or see a puppet show. Call you local branch library for details.

Summer Reading Club

Every summer the LAPL offers children a fun way to experience the joy of reading with the Summer Reading Club. Branches throughout the city offer a variety of free, entertaining, book-related programs.

Homework Success

Teachers, if you let us know about specific assignments we may be able to request and hold material for your class. Enrich your curriculum by letting us recommend great grade-appropriate titles.

Library Visits by your classes help kids understand the resources available at the library, and they can get their own library cards with parent permission. Call to schedule a visit. Also, Children's Librarians are happy to visit classrooms at your school to tell kids about the library.

Teacher's Loans extend access to materials for classroom use. Limited availability of some subjects. Please ask for information.

Grandparents and Books (GAB)

Volunteers 21 years and older are available in all LAPL branches and Central Library to share the love of reading and books by reading aloud to children. Some volunteers read in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, or other languages in addition to English. Children can earn a free book once a year from GAB.

If you would like to be a GAB reading volunteer, click on the above GAB link to learn more.
