Philbrick’s most recent book, "In the Heart of the Sea," which
offered the riveting story of what happened to the crewmembers of
the Nantucket whaleship Essex after it was rammed and sunk by an
enraged sperm whale in the South Pacific, was a New York Times bestseller
and winner of the National Book Award for Nonfiction. Philbrick’s
new book tells the story of the largest voyage of discovery in the
history of the world. The U.S. Exploring Expedition logged 87,000
miles, surveyed 280 Pacific islands as well as the coasts of northern
Antarctica and northwestern America, and identified 2,000 new species
of plants and animals, doing for the Pacific Ocean what Lewis and
Clark did for the American West.
