Carlos Ruiz Zafón is a native of Barcelona and currently lives in Los Angeles. "The Shadow of the Wind" is his first novel. It was voted by La Vanguardia , Barcelona's main newspaper, the best book of 2002, has spent two years at the top of Spain's bestseller lists, and has been sold in over twenty countries. Zafon, 39, is also the award-winning author of four successful young-adult novels, and a screenwriter.

Lucia Graves, the daughter of the poet Robert Graves, was raised by her parents in postwar Spain, on the island of Majorca. After graduating from St. Anne's College, Oxford, she returned to Spain to pursue a career as a literary translator and writer. She has published Spanish-language versions of her father's works and of books by Katherine Mansfield and Anaïs Nin. Her first novel, "La Casa de la Memoria," was recently published in Barcelona, as was her memoir, "A Woman Unknown."
