If you've heard it once, you've heard it a million times - the book was better. There's nothing like debating the differences between a favorite book and its translation to the screen. But if you don't know your beloved series is coming out as a movie or that the fun looking preview you saw was adapted from a book, how can you join the debate? The Library to the rescue! Here we will be exploring the movie adaptations soon to hit your local theatres and give you the chance to read before you view.

Coming this July :

This month we are going to shake things up a bit and take a look at the small screen. Here's a look at current and upcoming television adaptations;


Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell                          Susanna Clarke

Currently being produced by the BBC, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is slated to premiere sometime in late 2014.

Adapted for television under the title of the first book in the series, Outlander's premiere season will run 16 episodes on the Starz network.

Hannibal introduces viewers to the infamous psychologist Hannibal Lecter and the stalwart FBI agent Jack Crawford. When grisly and unsettling murders stump FBI agents, Jack Crawford brings unconventional specialists Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter on board. One an empathic profiler with an eerie ability to place himself in the killer's shoes, the other a talented and intense psychologist whose stated intention is to keep Will from going too far. An origin story, the show is slated to eventually follow the characters through Harris’ sequels The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.

Hannibal airs on NBC and recently concluded its second season. The third season will premiere in early 2015.

A continent spanning, multiple character viewpoint fantasy of epic proportions, The Song of Ice and Fire series has mesmerized readers for over a decade. Based on the War of the Roses and the Plantagenet family, the series explores the political machinations, social expectations and cultural foundations of an imagined Medieval world in which magic is reawakening.

Adapted for television under the title Game of Thrones, the show recently concluded its fourth season.

Game of Thrones airs on HBO. The fifth season is slated to start in April 2015.
