New Test Preparation for High School Equivalency Certificate Exams

Social Science, Philosophy and Religion Department, Central Library,

In recent years, high school education in America has evolved to prepare students for the changing demands of entry level careers, vocational and technical schools and introductory college courses.  Change has also come to the GED (General Education Development) high school equivalency exam, the nation’s standard in determining whether a student has mastered high school standards.

In 2014, the GED test was revised to a computer based format, and as a result of some of these revisions, many states have looked to offer students alternatives to the GED.  Last year, the California Department of Education approved two new exams that can be used to earn a California High School Equivalency Certificate:  the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) and TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion).

The Los Angeles Public Library subscribes to online databases that offer free online test preparation for many different tests, including the new HiSET and TASC exams.  The Testing and Education Reference Center database has recently added test preparation material for these two new tests, including practice exams and other resources.

Another database, LearningExpress Library has also recently added test preparation material for the HiSET and TASC.  LearningExpress Library offers practice exams in each of the subject areas covered on the TASC and HiSET.  Upon completion of a practice test, students receive exam scores.  Both databases provide additional resources and links to aid students in their preparation for each of the new exams.

Testing and Education Reference Center and LearningExpress Library may be accessed from the Los Angeles Public Library homepage under the Research & Homework link ( and through the Online Learning link located on the gray navigation bar (  Both databases may be accessed at any Los Angeles Public Library branch as well as outside the Library.  Patrons accessing these databases from outside the Library will need to have their Library card number and PIN number to login.
