Deliver Us From Evil

Social Science, Philosophy and Religion Department, Central Library,

Fall is finally here offering cooler temperatures after a long, hot, and record-setting dry summer. What a wonderful time of year!  Halloween is upon us. Adults and children deciding what to wear in celebration of Halloween. The shopping malls are busy decorating in preparation for the Holiday Season. (Doesn’t it seem like the Holiday Season is starting earlier and earlier every year???) The World Series, the ultimate “Fall Classic,” is about to start. The NBA regular season begins at the end of October. College football and the National Football League are in full-swing. Thanksgiving is just around the corner bringing thoughts of family, friends, and food. Lots of fun festivals are scheduled throughout our lovely city. You “gotta” love this time of year- lots of joy, celebration, and merriment.

But…there is another side to this season that is dark and frightening. Deliver Us from Evil, a book written by Ralph Sarchie, an ex-NYPD cop who moonlights as a demonologist, warns the reader there is an increase in demonic activity during Halloween and Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead)- which is celebrated on October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd in connection with Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day.

Deliver Us from Evil is scary and, at the same time, intriguing and informative.  (Early this summer a movie, loosely based on this work, was showing in movie theaters across the nation.)  Some insights Sarchie shares in his book:

  1. an increase in demonic activity between October 31st to November 2nd (as stated earlier in this blog)
  2. the power the exorcist has over the demon by knowing its name
  3. the power of holy relics over the demon
  4. he mentions Malachi Martin and Ed and Lorraine Warren as powerful exorcists

Deliver Us from Evil is a shocking look into the world of the demonologist. A fascinating read.

If you are interested in the topic of demonology- here are some books to get you started:

The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio

Don’t spend this season alone… for more than one reason.
