Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.
On this day in 1913, Barbara Pym was born. Pym published six novels between 1950 and 1961; although they were successful, she was unable to find publishers for several years, as her writing was considered old-fashioned. A 1977 newspaper article in which she was listed among the most under-rated writers of the century revived interest in her work, and she published three more novels before her death in 1980. Pym's novels are comedies of manners set in suburban and rural England, often focusing on the community that develops around the local church. Her 1952 novel Excellent Women is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, or in print.
On this day in 1954, Dennis Haysbert was born. Haysbert has worked steadily in film and television for the last thirty years. His most memorable films include the Major League series, Love Field, and Far From Heaven. He is perhaps most recognized for several seasons playing the president of the United States on the TV spy drama 24. Haysbert stars with Joseph Fiennes in The Color of Freedom, about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and his prison guard; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
And today is the first day of the 2017 National Senior Games, held in Birmingham, Alabama. During the next two weeks, 10,000 athletes aged 50 and up will compete in 19 different events. The Games have been held every two years since 1987. The documentary Age of Champions follows five athletes as they prepare to compete in the National Senior Games; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
