|On this day in 1818, Emily Brontë was born. Brontë was a novelist and poet who wrote only one novel before her death at age 30 -- Wuthering Heights, one of the classics of English literature. When it was published (under the pseudonym "Ellis Bell"), the novel was praised for the quality of the writing, but critics were puzzled by the unusual structure of the plot and shocked by the behavior of its characters. The novel has been adapted for film more than 20 times, and transformed into a musical, a ballet, and at least three different operas. |On this day in 1961, Laurence Fishburne was born. Fishburne's career began as a child actor. Among his early roles was that of a 17-year-old crewman in Apocalypse Now, a part he had lied about his age to get when he was 14; filming took so long that he actually was 17 by the time it was done. Fishburne's other films include Boyz n the Hood, What's Love Got to Do With It, and the Matrix trilogy. Fishburne stars with Irène Jacob and Kenneth Branagh in a 1995 adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, available for streaming at Hoopla.|
|And on this day in 1962, Alton Brown was born. Brown is a TV food personality, best known for his 1998-2012 series Good Eats, which provided a mix of historical information, trivia, science, and recipe about a different ingredient or cooking technique in each episode. In I'm Just Here for the Food, Brown focuses each chapter on a specific way of cooking -- stewing, steaming, pressure cooking, and so on -- leading the reader from the basics to more advanced techniques.
