Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

The Moonglows: Most of All: The Singles On this day in 1929, Harvey Fuqua was born. Fuqua was the founder of the mid-50s R&B group The Moonglows, who had such hits as "Sincerely" and "Ten Commandments of Love." He left the group in 1958, and focused his attention behind the scenes. For most of the 1960s, Fuqua was Motown's head of artist development; among his discoveries were The Spinners and Tammi Terrell. He would have success as a disco producer in the 70s after leaving Motown, working with The Weather Girls and Sylvester. The highlights of The Moonglows' career are collected in Most of All: The Singles, which is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Jack Higgins: The Eagle Has Landed On this day in 1929, Jack Higgins was born. Higgins is an author of espionage and military thrillers. He began writing in the late 1950s, using a variety of pseudonyms; "Jack Higgins" first appeared in 1966. Higgins had some minor success in the early 1970s, but it was The Eagle Has Landed, his 37th novel, that finally made him a best-seller. It tells the story of a German commando unit sent into England to kidnap Winston Churchill. The Eagle Has Landed is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive.
Bobbie Gentry: Ode to Billie Joe And on this day in 1944, Bobbie Gentry was born. Gentry was a singer of the late 1960s, one of the first female country singers to write and produce her own material. She broke through to the mainstream with the massive 1967 hit "Ode to Billie Joe," the cryptic, eerie story of a young man who commits suicide by jumping off a bridge. Gentry retired from performing after only a decade, and lives a very private life. Several of Gentry's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla.
