In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wells was an early leader in the African-American civil rights movement and the suffragist movement. Her investigative reporting on lynching in the 1890s fought back against the idea that lynching was primarily used to punish criminal behavior; she reported that it was largely used to control of legal behavior that offended white society. In 1909. Wells was among the founders of the National Assocation for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Mia Bay's biography of Wells, To Tell the Truth Freely, is available as an e-book at OverDrive
