Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Rembrandt: Self Portrait On this day in 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn was born. Rembrandt is among the great artists of world history, gifted at painting, drawing, and etching. His subjects were varied -- portraits, landscapes, Biblical and historical scenes, and more than 60 self-portraits, painted and etched throughout his life. Rembrandt's life and works are the subject of a documentary in the Exhibition on Screen series, available for streaming at Kanopy.
Millie Jackson: An Imitation of Love On this day in 1944, Millie Jackson was born. Jackson is an R&B singer whose biggest commercial success came in the early 1970s with such hits as "My Man, a Sweet Man," "It Hurts So Good," and "Ask Me What You Want." Her performances, especially in concert, were notable for including long, raunchy spoken interludes. Jackson released her last album in 2001, and has performed only rarely since then. Several of Jackson's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Richard Russo: Straight Man And on this day in 1949, Richard Russo was born. Russo is a novelist and screenwriter whose work often focuses on the lives of working-class men in small towns. His films include the crime thrillers Twilight and The Ice Harvest (both co-written with Robert Benton). In his comic novel Straight Man, Russo draws loosely on his years as a college professor to tell the tale of a man whose mid-life crisis is triggered by unexpectedly being named chair of the English department. Straight Man is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, or in print.
