Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Gateway Arch On this day in 1910, Eero Saarinen was born. Saarinen was an architect and furniture designer who designed the Gateway Arch, part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. When Saarinen's design was chosen as a finalist for the project, the jury accidentally notified his father, Elial -- a prominent architect in his own right, who had also entered the competition -- that his design had been chosen. When the error was corrected a few hours later, the Saarinen family treated themselves to a second bottle of champagne. Construction of the Arch began in 1963 and took more than two years. The story of the Arch's design and construction is told in the documentary The Gateway Arch, which is available for streaming at Kanopy.
Robert Plant: Pictures at Eleven On this day in 1948, Robert Plant was born. From 1968 to 1980, Plant was the lead singer and lyricist for Led Zeppelin. His loud, wailing vocals have been enormously influential on later rock singers, and he is usually found near the top of "best voices in rock" lists. Since 1980, Plant has worked primarily as a solo artist or with various short-lived bands, with occasional Led Zeppelin reunions. A variety of Plant's music, both with Led Zeppelin and as a solo act, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Silver Linings Playbook And on this day in 1958, David O. Russell was born. Russell is a director and screenwriter who has become one of Hollywood's most consistent movie makers. Between 2010 and 2013, he made three films -- The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle -- that all received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. The romantic comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as emotionally troubled people who bond as they prepare for a dance competition; it's available for streaming at OverDrive.
