On this day in 1644, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was born. Biber was a virtuoso violinist, and one of the major composers of music for the violin. His best known work is The Mystery Sonatas, sometimes called The Rosary Sonatas, a set of short violin sonatas; each piece is a musical depiction of one of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, and each requires that the violin be tuned in a different non-standard way. Reinhard Goebel's performance of Biber's Mystery Sonatas is available for streaming at Hoopla.
On this day in 1876, Mary Roberts Rinehart was born. Rinehart was a prolific novelist of the early 20th century, best remembered today for her murder mysteries; she is sometimes referred to as "the American Agatha Christie." Her 1908 novel The Circular Staircase is considered to be the first of the "had I but known" school of mystery writing, in which the central character (usually a young woman) regrets the foolish error that has led her into such dire circumstances. The Circular Staircase is available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive
And on this day in 1912, Samuel Fuller was born. Fuller was a director of low-budget genre films in the 1950s and 1960s -- Westerns, war movies, crime thrillers -- whose films often explored shocking or controversial subjects. He returned to directing in 1980, after not making a movie for more than a decade, with the World War II epic The Big Red One. Fuller's 1964 thriller The Naked Kiss stars Constance Towers as a former prostitute trying to reform herself by working as a pediatric nurse; it's available for streaming at Kanopy.
