Some of the most commonly requested items from the Social Science, Philosophy and Religion department are study guides for municipal occupational exams, such as the Administrative Clerk position (formerly called Clerk Typist). While the Los Angeles Public Library owns several copies of the Clerk Typist test review book, these popular study guides are often quickly checked out when cities or counties offer testing and there may be waiting lists for the books. What many people might not know is the Library offers online databases with e-books and practice exams to help test takers prepare for this occupational exam and many others.
LearningExpress Library database has a Career Center section with links to resources to study for occupational tests. From the Career Center page, click on “Prepare for an occupational exam” and then scroll down to the “Civil Service” tab. There is a link to e-books with the most common material tested on the Administrative Clerk position such as reading comprehension, arithmetic review and problem solving skills. The second link goes to online general Civil Service practice exams that give test takers a way to evaluate how they may perform and where additional study is needed.
Testing & Education Reference Center database also provides a Career Tools tab with links to resources available for many occupational tests. Clicking on the Clerical link displays e-books to review reading comprehension, arithmetic, vocabulary and other commonly asked questions on clerical exams.

LearningExpress Library and Testing & Education Reference Center may be accessed from the Los Angeles Public Library homepage under the Research & Homework link (http://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) and through the Online Learning link located on the gray navigation bar (http://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/online-learning). While both databases may be used at any Los Angeles Public Library branch or outside the Library, external access requires a Library card number and PIN number to validate and login.
Although there may be not anything to provide a complete sense of ease when preparing for an occupational exam, preparation and review are some the best things to do, so let the Los Angeles Public Library assist with all of our different resources.
