The last Saturday of April marks the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. The purpose of this day is to promote the related disciplines of Tai chi and Qigong internationally, as well as acting as an information source on medical research and finding classes for practice. 

The mind-body exercise Tai Chi or taiji (太極) can be translated as “supreme ultimate,” and qigong or chi kung (氣功) literary means “life energy cultivation.” With graceful movements and controlled breathing, resembling a slow dance, Tai chi is an inviting exercise for everyone, from the most fit and flexible to a person recovering from surgery. 

According to Harvard Medical School’s Health Publications, “Tai chi is often described as ‘meditation in motion,’ but it might well be called ‘medication in motion.’ There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.” 

Attending classes may be the best way to learn Tai Chi, as it gives a wonderful opportunity to see an instructor in action, receiving feedback, and experiencing the camaraderie of a group. Please join us for our free classic Tai Chi classes with instructor Bill Cheng. The classes will include demonstration, posture practice of 108 classic Tai Chi forms, as well as questions and answers. 

The classes will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room A and B of Central Library in the following Saturdays: April 9, 16, 23, 30; May 7, 14, 28; June 4, 11, 18. Please wear comfortable clothing. All ages are welcome.
