The Business & Economics Department in Central Library has launched its new Job & Career Collection, located next to the Business & Economics Information Desk on Lower Level 1. The Collection offers one-stop browsing of current job and career books and related brochures and flyers listing programs, events, services and resources available from the library and from outside the library. Subjects included in the collection: choosing and preparing for a career or occupation, job hunting skills, writing resumes and cover letters, preparing and performing for job interviews, and advancing and developing your career. Also included is a selection of books profiling a variety of occupations and careers in business, management, finance, real estate, advertising, public relations, and others fields. In addition to the titles displayed in the Job & Career Collection are additional books, DVDs, CDs, audiotapes, and videotapes available on the regular reading room shelves in the Business & Economics Dept. under call numbers such as 331.7 - 650.1 - 658.3115 - 658.339, and others.
Other departments in the Central Library, including the Social Sciences, Philosophy & Religion Department (Lower Level 3) and Teen’Scape (Upper Level 2) offer more on the subject with their collections of education guides and directories, job and educational examination preparation books, and titles covering a wide variety of occupations and career choices.
Also check the online website for the Los Angeles Public Library’s Job Hunting & Career Guide, with more than 200 employment-related Web sites and resources, referrals to assistance available in-person and by telephone, and selected online and print resources available from the library. In addition, the Los Angeles Public Library offers a number of online databases available both in the library and outside the library for those with a currently valid library card or e-card for the Los Angeles Public Library. Gale Virtual Reference Library (Reference eBooks)
A collection of reference eBooks on a wide variety of topics, with many on careers. Also offers the College Blue Book. Portions of the books can be downloaded onto eReader devices.
Learn4Life (formerly ed2go)
Offers a wide range of highly interactive online courses. All of the courses are free, and led by expert instructors. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month.
Learning Express Library
Online interactive practice exams covering adult basic, academic, job related, civil service, real estate skills and more. Includes a “Job Search & Workplace Skills Learning Center.” Requires LAPL library card or e-card to use outside the library.
Live Homework Help (Tutor.com)
Includes career center that offers help with searching for a job, writing an effective resume, or preparing for an interview. Some content available 24/7; one-on-one online tutor available 3:00-10:00.
Testing & Education Reference Center
Over 300 practice tests and courses, information on over 4,000 accredited schools, eBooks containing study materials and practice tests, scholarship search, resume builder, and career modules with subjects from career change to salary negotiations.
Over 500 online non-credit Continuing Education Courses. These courses are led by expert instructors and are provided for your personal enrichment.
Vocation, Careers & Technical Education
Collection of nearly 400 journals from career guides to specialized industry journals on searching for and maintaining a career. Requires LAPL library card or e-card to use outside the library.
