Materials & Collections
Since its inception in 1994, Teen'Scape has incorporated the interests of Los Angeles area teenagers and gives them a place of their own to work on computers, study, read, or “hang out.” In March of 2000, Teen'Scape expanded into its current site, an area more than twice the size of the original. The name “teen'scape” is meant to convey both sanctuary for and ownership by teenagers.
Teen'Scape enjoys a large book collection, a group study area, and more than two-dozen computers where teens can do research on library databases, work on homework, or access the Internet.
The department has an outstanding collection that includes:
- Young Adult fiction
- Young Adult non-fiction
- Graphic novels
- Manga
- Test-prep materials (SAT, ACT, AP, CAHSEE, GED, CHSPE, etc.)
- College and career guides
- Cliffs Notes
- Classic literature
Teen'Scape also has popular paperbacks, magazines, and DVDs available for check out.
Events
Like other branches and departments in the Los Angeles Public Library system, Teen'Scape sponsors free events throughout the year. From Xbox Fridays and Teen Council Tuesdays to the Student Smart college prep programs and the High School Habits series, to career counseling, drawing workshops, Money 101, and the ever-popular Summer Reading Club, Teen'Scape's programs appeal to teenagers. Check our online Events calendar to see what events we have coming up.
Tours
Schools, youth groups, and organizations are welcome to visit Teen’Scape and Central Library. Teen’Scape can accommodate groups of teens, introduce library research skills, or provide Teen’Scape tours.
We encourage teachers planning a visit to Teen’Scape to combine the trip with a current homework assignment. Teen’Scape staff will reserve Internet computers for the visiting class and our librarians will instruct your students in effective research techniques for the prearranged assignment using the library’s online catalog and databases. Please call at least three weeks ahead to schedule a class visit.
Groups and classes desiring only a tour of Central Library, including a walkthrough of Teen’Scape, should contact the Docent’s Office at (213) 228-7168. Groups interested in a Teen’scape orientation and/or database/catalog instruction (a tour of Central Library may also be arranged as a portion of this visit if desired) should contact a Teen’Scape librarian at (213) 228-7221 or (213) 228-7290.
And There’s More...
- The LAPL Teen Web is designed especially for teenagers and provides easy access to the library’s most useful online resources for middle and high school students as well as teen-oriented web links, homework help sites, and LAPL’s own interactive online library game: the Goodhue Codex.
- All teens needing assistance are welcome to come in to the Teen’Scape information desk, and Teen’Scape staff will assist them in using Teen'Scape materials and other resources available in the Central Library.
- Teen’Scape librarians also provide outreach to local schools, parents, and youth service agencies.
