Here’s something you may not know about the World Famous (or at least Los Angeles Famous) Children’s Literature Department at Central Library. If it weren’t for a puppet show, it might not ever have existed. Okay, make that a lot of puppet shows. And a cadre of dedicated librarians and volunteers who fought for a library for the children of Los Angeles… especially downtown Los Angeles. Since May of this year, we began to post a monthly list of newly arrived titles. Since the beginning of July, we have a new section called British Television that gathered all television programming from the British Broadcasting Corporation and other European producers.
Working on the reference desk in the International Languages Department of the Central Library in Los Angeles, one of the most diverse cities in the country is an exciting job! I speak Spanish so I spend a large part of day helping Spanish-speaking patrons find information. I also speak some French but don’t use it as much as my Spanish. But when I get a patron who speaks a language other than English, Spanish, or French, it’s time to put my thinking cap on!

Many patrons of Central Library are aware that the Science, Technology and Patents Department carries print subscriptions to Macworld, PCWorld, Technology Review and several other popular computer and technology magazines.
In addition to hosting class visits, and teen activities and events, Central Library’s Teen’Scape also has an active teen volunteer program. So active, in fact, that during the month of June our volunteers logged 180 hours of community service. So, what exactly does a teen volunteer do?
