Volunteer Opportunities at Los Angeles Public Library

Volunteering at the Los Angeles Public Library connects you with the world of literacy, cultural diversity, and learning. Rewarding opportunities exist at the Central Library and branch facilities. In all cases, excellent training is provided to ensure that your volunteer experience is both enjoyable and fruitful.

Central Library Docents
Docents share with visitors all that's intriguing, informative, and entertaining at the Central Library including its art, architecture, rare books and special services. Help others discover the many treasures of the Central Library. Use this application form (Adobe Acrobat) or call (213) 228-7283 for more information about training.

Friends Groups
Friends Groups are active community members joining together to support their local branch library or Central Library department. More information.

GAB (Grandparents and Books)
Adults 21 years and older share their love of books with children by reading aloud to them at the library. GAB Workshop Schedule and Application

Homebound Friends and Neighbors
Brighten the days for those who are homebound or residents of a retirement or healthcare facility by delivering to them books and other enjoyable library materials.

Literacy
One in five Americans can't read well enough to meet daily needs. Literacy volunteers provide individual instruction in basic reading and writing skills. More information.

Special Events
Volunteer hosts make cultural and educational programs events to remember. Exciting opportunities include children's festivals, poetry readings, author-led book discussions, and distinguished lecturer series.

Special Projects
Hard-working behind-the-scenes volunteers help in many important ways: Introducing patrons to the library's computer and electronic resources; assisting the Library Foundation gift store in the Central Library; processing library books and materials; and tutoring and mentoring teen library patrons.
