What's New

  • The Board of Library Commissioners has approved the following changes to the Library's Fines/Fees Schedule and Loan Period, to be effective July 13, 2008.

    • The daily overdue fine for adult material will increase from 25 cents to 30 cents.
    • The loan period for books, magazines and audiobooks will decrease from 3 weeks to 2 weeks. (Items may be renewed 3 times if they have not been reserved by other patrons.)
    • Those residing outside of Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties will be charged an annual fee of $25.00 for a library card.


  • Read to Me L.A. is a free program that teaches parents and caregivers how to read to their preschool children and help them become successful readers.

  • The Central Library Docents are looking for volunteers.

  • Pay fines online or get e-mail notifications of Los Angeles Public Library events.

  • Los Angeles Public Library Strategic Plan 2007-2010 (Adobe Acrobat 10MB) is now available.

  • Free public wireless Internet "Hot Spots," are at all Los Angeles Public Library locations. Note: 802.11B wireless access is available. Laptops must have DHCP enabled. LAPL Staff cannot assist in setting up laptops to work with the wireless access.

  • A new searchable calendar of library events is online.

  • InfoNow reference service now offers Instant Messaging (IM) access.

  • Thursdays@Central is a new lunchtime series. See what programs are coming up.
